6 POWER
Supplements - Why You Need Them?
(6) Multivitamins Build Strong Bodies:
Many people who eat a generally healthy diet simply don't
believe that they need to take supplements. You may eat
organic fruits and vegetables, watch your sugar and salt intake,
and avoid trans-fats, but in the world we live in, the harsh
reality is it simply is not enough. Even whole foods are
often grown in nutrient depleted soils and don't have enough
vitamins and minerals to meet our body's needs. Add to
that the fact that problem with cell membrane dysfunction -
inflammation, oxidation, and toxicity - are a direct result of
poor dietary habits. Multivitamin nutrients are the
foundation for protection and restoration of all of the body's
systems. It's simply logical that there are different
vitamin requirements for improving your health compared to just
maintaining your health.
If your still not convinced, consider a
2002 study
in The Journal of the American Medical Association, that
states "Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all
vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness
from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to
take vitamin supplements"
When choosing a multivitamin supplement make sure it contains a
wide variety of bioavailable nutrients in the correct amounts
which may be different than the USRDA (Recommended Daily
Allowance for the United States). The truth is that while
there are certain nutrients to avoid in high amounts, the
guidelines really represent (in my opinion) a minimum amount
needed to "maintain" health for the general population.
This amount is obviously different for each individual and
varies in relation to age and present state of health.
The top, premium brands of supplements will pack these nutrients
in a base of herbs and phytonutrients, such as broccoli, kelp,
or rose hips - all of which work synergistically to enhance the
absorption of the vitamins and minerals in the product.
You might ask, which form of multivitamin is best? Liquid
or pill? Liquid multivitamins absorb faster than vitamins in
pill form and for this reason can provide a quick feel-good
energy response. However, vitamins in pill form are not
inferior and if the two supplements are equal in nutrient
content, then there is no additional benefit to taking the
liquid. My personal preference is a liquid multivitamin
supplement. Despite this and all the hype over liquids,
according to the
Mayo clinic, there is no difference in absorption by
the body.
